Saint Louis University Museum of Art (SLUMA) to host
Resilience: The Sculpture of Philip Hitchcock

Exhibit to feature Christ Embracing the Cross,
a new statue by artist Philip Hitchcock

January 4, 2008 – Saint Louis University Museum of Art (SLUMA) will host Resilience: The Sculpture of Philip Hitchcock. The exhibition opens January 4, 2008 and continues through February 15, 2008 with a public reception for the artist Friday, January 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On view will be fifteen pieces of Hitchcock’s work including the centerpiece of the exhibit, Christ Embracing the Cross, a lifesize statue of Christ commissioned by University President Lawrence H. Biondi, S.J. on behalf of Saint Louis University Museum of Art.

The nude statue of Christ depicts the moment of choice when Christ not only accepts, but actively chooses his destiny. It is at once a depiction of profound resignation and one of total free will.

Also on view will be Hitchcock’s Creation of Adam, a sculpture that provoked controversy in 2006 when Hitchcock removed the piece from Foundry Art Center after learning that officials there were censoring the piece.

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is located at 3663 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108. Museum hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. For more information call (314) 977-2666.http://www.slu.edu/x20069.xml
