FIFTEEN YEARS OF LEARNER’S STATUETTES!

June, 2022

Hitchcock Designs has been creating the Learner’s Statuettes exclusively for St. Louis Central Institute (CID) for 15 years. CID is a school where children who are deaf learn to listen, talk, read, and succeed. CID empowers families and professionals worldwide.

The statuette is a replica maquette of a much larger marble statue in the CID lobby. The smaller maquettes are hand cast and finished resin miniatures which are mounted on walnut bases. CID uses the statuettes to acknowledge donors who have made a significant donation to CID. Hitchcock Designs creates 16-24 statuettes annually for Central Institute of the Deaf.

Visiting Artist Gets Male Model Plastered!

February 17, 2015

Mischief Cards and Gifts hosts Body Casting Demo by Artist Philip Hitchcock

Challenging. Alluring. Rock Hard. The life-size male erotic figures of Philip Hitchcock merge fantasy and reality to create powerful sculptural forms, evoking themes of heroism and human frailty. The hyper-realistic forms, which are created from multiple castings of live models, are layered and embellished with accoutrements. Hitchcock will demonstrate the bodycasting process using fitness expert and physique model Christopher Bates at Mischief Cards and Gifts in Palm Springs. The public demonstration is free and takes place Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7PM.

Hitchcock mixes a fast setting impression material used by dentists and applies it directly to the model's bare skin. The non-toxic goo is supple enough to capture goose bumps and eyelashes. Castings are reorganized, refined, and bronzed yielding works reminiscent of Greek statues.

Several of Hitchcock sculptures are on view at Mischief Cards and Gifts in Palm Springs. Along with limited edition photographs of select works by Hitchcock; plates taken from his book, Dark Impressions, The Art of Philip Hitchcock. The limited edition archival digital 16 x 20" prints are framed to 22 x 28." The artist is on hand to sign copies of his book after the bodycast demonstration. Mischief Cards and Gifts is located at 210 E Arenas Rd., Palm Springs, California 92262.

DARK IMPRESSIONS

January 19 - February 23, 2013

Sculpture and Photography by Philip Hitchcock

PHD Gallery showcases the work of gallery owner and artist Philip Hitchcock. Challenging and alluring, the life-size male erotic figures of Philip Hitchcock merge fantasy and reality to create powerful sculptural forms, evoking themes of heroism and human frailty. Focusing on mythology from different cultures, Hitchcock creates contemporary representations of historical icons whose grandeur is humanized by their corporeal sensuality. The hyper-realistic forms, which are created from multiple castings of live models, are layered and embellished with accoutrements. Of this body of work Dr. William H. Gerdts an American art historian and Professor Emeritus of Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center writes: “Hitchcock’s sculpture is really powerful stuff. His technical aesthetic is very much his own innovation. He is able to manipulate his castings through tremendously imaginative reorganization and addition of forms, through carefully selected segmentation, and through dramatic color expression, which move into a darker, intensely more private world of fear, desire, and renewal.”

Although PHD Gallery will showcase several of Hitchcock’s life-size sculptures, central to this exhibit are the limited edition photographs of select works shot by Hitchcock. Many images are plates taken from his book, Dark Impressions, The Art of Philip Hitchcock. The artist is on hand to sign copies of his book at a free public reception on Saturday, January 19, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

KOUROS 2013

January 2013

The recently completed KOUROS 2013 has shipped to Alberta, Canada for installation in a private collection. Hitchcock's newest sculpture is a reference to those representations of male youths which first appear in the Archaic period in Greece. Traditional Kouroi are layered with meaning, always beardless, take a formulaic advancing posture, and are most often nude. Hitchcock's version take a decidedly erotic turn with the addition of the erect phallus, and the advancing posture replaced by chain suspensions which arrest all motion. The hands are literally bolted to the sides.

The sculpture is derived from casts taken from two men is comprised of steel and fiberglass reinforced gypsum. It hangs on two fifteen foot chains, though shown here suspended from a scaffolding.

Of Myth and Mortals

January 27 - Jun 9, 2012

The Erotic Sculpture of Philip Hitchcock Featured in the Guest Artist Gallery Of Chicago Leather Archives and Museum

OPENING RECEPTION:
Friday, January 27
7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Challenging. Alluring. Rock Hard. The life-size male erotic figures of Philip Hitchcock merge fantasy and reality to create powerful sculptural forms, evoking themes of heroism and human frailty. Focusing on ancient mythology from different cultures, Hitchcock creates contemporary representations of iconic deities whose grandeur is humanized by their corporeal sensuality. The hyper-realistic forms, which are created from multiple castings of live models, are layered and embellished with accoutrements. The work is a metaphor for the human condition one decade into the 21st century: It presents a core of realism surrounded by the more unnerving images we wish the world to notice and judge. Of this body of work Dr. William Whittington, Assistant Chair of Critical Studies at University of Southern California writes: "(Hitchcock's) aesthetic presents idealized castings of the human figure, which are powerful enough alone, yet he retrofits these bodies, infusing them with technology, eroticism, and discourses on pain and pleasure. At the site of this fusion, the heroic figure transforms, activating new interpretations."

Nearly a dozen of Hitchcock sculptures are on view at Chicago's Leather Archives and Museum (LA&M) from January 27, through June 30, 2012. Also on view are ten limited edition photographs of select works by Hitchcock, plates taken from his book, Dark Impressions, The Art of Philip Hitchcock. The artist is on hand to sign copies of his book at a free public reception at The Leather Archives and Museum on Friday, January 27, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The Leather Archives and Museum is located at 6418 North Greenview Ave. in Chicago, Illinois.

Of Myth and Mortal focuses on legendary myths borrowed from Greek, Celtic, Egyptian and Christian mythologies. Among the statues on view are Cernunnos, the horned Celtic god of fertility, Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead, Prometheus, the Greek god of fire, Thor the Norse god of thunder, The Black Knight from medieval lore, and Jesus, central figure of Christianity. A selection of torsos, reminiscent of classical ruins, are also on view. The pieces created with concrete, steel, and fiberglass, start with multiple cast impressions from live models.

Of Myth and Mortal also showcases limited edition prints, signed by the artist, many of which are featured in his book Dark Impressions, The Art of Philip Hitchcock.. The images are signed and numbered archival digital prints at 16 x 20" which are framed to 22 x 28."

The exhibition continues at The Chicago Leather Archives through June 9, 2012.

Artist Philip Hitchcock Creates Bust of Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz

September 2009

Bust now on Permanent Display at Chaifetz Arena

September, 2009 - On behalf of Saint Louis University, artist Philip Hitchcock has completed the bust of Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz now on permanent display at the Chaifetz Arena. The portrait bust is created from facial impressions taken of Dr. Chaifetz by Hitchcock in Chicago last year.

Chaifetz, a 1975 graduate of Saint Louis University, is a licensed neuropsychologist and is founder, chairman and CEO of Chicago-based ComPsych Corporation, the world's largest provider of employee assistance programs. January 4, 2008 - Saint Louis University Museum of Art (SLUMA) will host Resilience: The Sculpture of Philip Hitchcock. The exhibition opens January 4, 2008 and continues through February 15, 2008 with a public reception for the artist Friday, January 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On view will be fifteen pieces of Hitchcock's work including the centerpiece of the exhibit, Christ Embracing the Cross, a lifesize statue of Christ commissioned by University President Lawrence H. Biondi, S.J. on behalf of Saint Louis University Museum of Art.

Also on view will be Hitchcock's Creation of Adam, a sculpture that provoked controversy in 2006 when Hitchcock removed the piece from Foundry Art Center after learning that officials there were censoring the piece.

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is located at 3663 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108. Museum hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

Heroes, Gods, Mortals - Warriors All

This new phase of sculptures by artist Philip Hitchcock presents the human form, armored, idealized and poised for battle in a re-imagined landscape of postmodern mythology, which collapses influences from Greek, Nordic, Medieval and Egyptian traditions. Each sculpture in this collection seems to demand a retelling of classical mythology from Thor--The God of Thunder to Prometheus--the savior of mankind and bringer of fire, while encouraging us to ask: What adventures lie ahead for these new heroes? What enemies will they confront? And, what sacrifices will they be required to make in a time of need?

Hitchcock's work presents a renewed sense of urgency to reexamine the heroic in a modern context. His aesthetic presents idealized castings of the human figure, which are powerful enough alone, yet he retrofits these bodies, infusing them with technology, eroticism, and discourses on pain and pleasure. At the site of this fusion, the heroic figure transforms, activating new interpretations. In Thus Spake Zarathusra, Nietzsche wrote, "Dead are all the Gods." But clearly, Philip Hitchcock's work seeks to resurrect these spirits for battle in the modern world.

I strongly suspect that these sculptures will inspire a new generation of artists and art lovers to seek out the heroic stories of the past, which are replete with powerful Gods, fearless heroes, epic battles, and endless struggles that still resonate today.

Hitchcock Pulls Statue from Foundry, Citing Censorship Exhibit relocated to ArtDimensions Centre Gallery

April 28-30, 2006

Saint Louis, MO - After less than two weeks at The Foundry Art Centre in Saint Charles, artist Philip Hitchcock removed "The Creation of Adam" due to repeated attempts to cover the statues nudity. "On at least two occasions the loins were draped with a tablecloth and on one occasion someone actually placed a Fig leaf, or some kind of dried foliage on the genitals of the statue," said Hitchcock. Eventually, a twelve foot wall was placed in front of the sculpture. Hitchcock has removed the sculpture from the Foundry Art Centre and withdrawn his support from the Saint Charles Spring ArtWalk.

ColesLamar Design & Gallery to host sculptural exhibition: "NeoClassic" Lifecast Sculpture by Philip Hitchcock

More than two decades ago, artist Philip Hitchcock left Saint Louis for Los Angeles. Now, after forging a red-hot career both in television and as a gallery artist, he's moved back to the city, and his new exhibit, "NeoClassic," opens Saturday, January 14, 2005 at The Gallery at ColesLamar. The reception starts at 7:00pm. The exhibit features more than a dozen life-size sculptures created from molded impressions of live models, and will be on view through March 14. For the curious, Hitchcock promises to demonstrate his amazing technique using a live, bare fleshed model. A silent auction of one of Hitchcock's works will benefit The Victory Fund. Also on hand, will be copies of the artist's book, Dark Impressions: The Art of Philip Hitchcock (Ellis Publications, 10/2000, $40). Beautifully photographed by the artist, it represents a range of his erotic lifecast imagery and light sculptures in nearly 100 pictures. It also features a "how to" sequence, written by Hitchcock.

When asked why the move, the artist muses, "You'll never beat the weather in L.A., but I was ready for a less aggressive lifestyle and a softer place to land. I wanted an urban environment that was culturally stimulating in a place where the people were genuine. I am overwhelmed by how friendly and warm people in Saint Louis have been. Oh yeah, What High School did you go to?"

Cruise the personal ads "Highways Style" and enjoy music and entertainment at The 6th Annual Highways Gallery Fundraiser: GWM, 10 x 8, UNCUT. The exhibit takes a look at the gay personal ad scene as photographers showcase 8 x 10 photos that are inspired by personal ads! The exhibit opens Thursday August 5, 2004 at 7:00pm. Twenty bucks gets you in the singles mix and proceeds directly benefit Highways Gallery.

Although GWM, 10 x 8, UNCUT appears on the surface to pander to prurient interests, the exhibit is an historical "time stamp" on contemporary gay culture and a relevant social commentary on gay mating rituals in the third millennium.

"It would be a glaring omission of any historian looking back on queer social morays at the eve of the 3rd millennium and not mention personal ad dating," says show curator and artist Philip Hitchcock. It is ironic that as a community we are fighting for the right to marry while still struggling to find the time and proper avenues to even meet the right person."

"Anyone who has ever been on a personal ad web site totally gets the vibe of this exhibit. It is an exploration of how we as gay men attempt to market ourselves to each other and which assets we choose to make our calling cards."

The opening night soiree will feature an appetizer buffet and no host cocktails. Also featured are select lounge acts and unsolicited dating advice from our panel of experts.

MYTH

August 2003

New Sculpture by Philip Hitchcock

Opening Night Reception to Benefit HIGHWAYS Performance Space and Gallery Santa Monica: MYTH: Life size male erotic sculpture by Philip Hitchcock will be exhibited at Highways Gallery in Santa Monica from August 1, 2003 through August 31, 2003 at the 5th Annual Highways Gallery Benefit. The opening night Benefit reception is on Thursday, August 7, 2003 starting at 7:00 pm. Meet the artist and his models at the reception, which also includes a no-host bar, fanciful hors d' hoevres. music and surprise entertainment. Tickets are $20. Gallery hours for the duration of the show are 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm before performances on weekends and during the week by appointment or chance. Highways is located at 1621 18th Street in Santa Monica.

MYTH showcases new works by Hitchcock that are inspired by Celtic, Greek, and Hindu, mythologies. Especially evocative among the new works are, The Eyes of Argus, The Myth of the Minotaur, and The Birth of Cernunnous. Argus is the trusted 100 eyed guard sent by Hera to watch over Zeus' concubine. Hermes slew him and the distraught Hera collected his beautiful eyes to be forever preserved in the feathers of the Peacock. The Minotaur is the abomination born to Pasipha after she seduced a White Bull sent by Poseidon. Cerrnunous, who pre-dates Christianity, is the Celtic God of fertility and renewal and is always depicted with Stag horns and an erect phallus.

"I have long been fascinated by the overt eroticism and sexually driven story lines of classical myth", confides Hitchcock. "I discovered that the sanitized stories I heard as a kid were actually rich with prurience! So I decided to create works that were a celebration of sexual fantasy, yet still grounded in the classics."

A special artist discussion will be held on Sunday, August 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The artist will present slides and video and lead a frank discussion of his work. There will also be a demonstration of Hitchcock's bodycast technique on a nude male model.

VISIT MY ANGEL!

May 2000

Los Angeles, California - Philip Hitchcock is among a select group of artists commissioned to design an angel for the Los Angeles Community of Angels project.
Artist Philip Hitchcock, sponsored by The CASCIO FOUNDATION, created "URBAN ANGEL." The artist's design required replacing the large fan like angel wings with a "skeletal frame" of rebar. The head and the hands were replaced with clear, polyester resin casts of hands and a human skull and the front of the angel was fitted with a muscular breastplate.

Says the artist, "I approached the concept more sculpturally than painterly. I wanted my design to reflect the darker, more urban side of Los Angeles."

URBAN ANGEL is on display through May 7, 2001 24 hours a day at 6922 HOLLYWOOD BLVD. HOLLYWOOD, CA 90028 (across from Mann's Chinese)

A Community of Angels TM is modeled after a project first introduced in Zurich, Switzerland in 1998. Zurich featured over 800 decorated fiberglass cows as public art, strategically placed throughout the public landscape. The idea was successfully replicated in Chicago in 1999 as "Cows on Parade," a project which entertained an estimated 10 million viewers and added $200 million to the local economy. Since then, a number of similar installations have popped up throughout the country, from vacationing cows in New York City to pigs in Cincinnati and lizard art in Orlando, Fla.

To bring the project to conclusion, the display season will be followed by a gala celebration May 17, 2001, organized for the purpose of auctioning off the finished Angels.

November 1999

Los Angeles - Canada's TV GUIDE TELEVISION took their cameras to the studio of artist Philip Hitchcock to capture the immortalization of soap star Winsor Harmon. The actor, who sizzles every day as "Thorne" on CBS's THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, had his torso cast in stone by the Venice Beach sculptor. Over 2 million viewers saw the November broadcast which highlighted every step of the intricate process, including the unveiling of the finished statue which nearly left the daytime heartthrob speechless! "That's amazing," remarked Harmon as he examined the finished creation, "I've never seen anything like it!" Coincidentally, another of Hitchcock's sculptures is already featured on the show and can be seen daily on the set of "Brooke's" penthouse office.

ARTIST CREATES CUSTOM MASKS

October 1999

Santa Monica - Investment guru Paul Sheehan retained the services of artist Philip Hitchcock to create original masks for a black tie Halloween benefit at Santa Monica's Museum of Flying. "Danse Macabre, An All Hallows Eve Masked Ball," honored famed horror director John Carpenter with The James Whale Award, which was presented by Daniel Baldwin. Proceeds from the event benefited The AIDS Research Alliance of America. For the event, Hitchcock created metallic "Jaguar masks" inspired by a Cartier cufflink design! The artist sculpted a clay likeness of the bejeweled cat and made silicone impressions from it. With the mold he cast ten copies of the designer mask using durable urethane resin. The masks were held by sparkling rods which resembled the actual cufflink stem. Each "Jaguar" was given a platinum finish and trimmed in rhinestones and glitter. The finishing touches were the three inch, blue sapphire eyes that lit up when the wearer pushed a button. "The look was utter sophistication," remarked Hitchcock, "especially since all the masquers donned a tux!"

DAVID MIXNER COMMISSIONS ARTIST PHILIP HITCHCOCK

March 1999

Los Angeles, CA - Author and political activist David Mixner has commissioned artist Philip Hitchcock to create a very special, and very personal sculpture. Mixner, who authored the top selling book, A Stranger Among Friends, wanted a figure that was a departure from the physically perfect models Hitchcock so frequently uses. "I was interested in a model who had an understated sensuality and innocence," remarked Mixner who has already collected two of the artistźs pieces, "I wanted a body type that had an everyman quality." The final sculpture was composed from a single model who posed for multiple castings. Five separate pieces comprise the finished sculpture which is boldly displayed in Mixner's foyer. "When people ask me if it's about civil rights or the struggle to be free... I just smile," says Mixner. "ECSTASY BOUND" can also be seen in the erotic art gallery secion.

ARTIST PHILIP HITCHCOCK RECREATES STOLEN HOLLYWOOD ARTIFACT

March 1999

Los Angeles, CA - Collector and "western officianado" Robert Kagan selected artist Philip Hitchcock for the painstaking task of recreating a sterling silver belt buckle to match the one worn by James Drury in the 60s TV show "The Virginian." Since the original buckle was stolen, Hitchcock accomplished the daunting task of replicating the buckle using only black and white "stills" taken of Drury during filming. "The images required significant enlargement and enhancement," recalls the artist, "and even with those it was necessary to get verbal descriptions from Mr. Drury." The finished buckle was given to James Drury as a gift. Kagan, who had tried three times before to have the buckle made by other artists, was so delighted, he had one made for himself! In fact, he commissioned Hitchcock to re-create another famous western belt buckle... the same one worn by James Arness in "Gunsmoke."

German TV Crew films Philip Hitchcock

February 3, 1999

for Prime Time Hit "LIEBE SUNDE." A film crew from Germany's "PRO-7" network has completed a segment on artist Philip Hitchcock for their Prime time hit "LIEBE SUNDE". The spot premiered on February 3, 1999 and was seen throughout Germany. The six minute segment features an interview with the artist, a tour of his studio, and records the step-by-step process of casting a live model from beginning to completion. Also caught on tape is the romantic loft-style home of a Newport Beach patron who has collected four of Hitchcock's arresting sculptures including the dramatic "Fallen Idol."

ITALIAN COLLECTOR COMMISSIONS "SECOND ORIGINALS"

A collector from Cagliari, Italy was disappointed to learn that another buyer had already purchased two of Philip Hitchcock's original sculptures, FOOTSOLDIER and OVERLORD. The two sculptures from Hitchcock's exhibit "Medieval/ Millennial" were among the first to sell. Since the sculptures were originals, no secondary molds were made. This made the notion of "editions" impossible.

To solve the problem, Hitchcock offered to recreate the pieces from the ground up. In one instance he was even able to hire the same model! While an attempt was made to be true to the feeling and spirit of the originals, exact copies were neither attempted nor desired. The "originals" are on the left, the "second originals" are on the right. Compare and contrast the following photos.

In the case of "FOOTSOLDIER", the same model was used, though dieting made him look leaner through the abdominals. The pose is nearly identical except for the tilt of the head and position of the left hand. In the "second original," the legs were left a little longer and the arc of the chest piece was changed. Wolf claws were substituted for muskrat claws and the Sheep skull shoulder armor was created from smaller skulls and extended slightly.

Greater differences are apparent with "OVERLORD" and OVERLORD 2". Here Hitchcock used a different model altogether. Mouflon Ram horns are as distinct as fingerprints so there is a big difference here. The collector also requested a bluish overall hue to the piece. Other differences are the shape of the eye pieces and the addition of a microphone. Once again, Wolf claws were used in place of Muskrat claws.

Buyers interested in commissions and "second originals" may contact the artist direct via e-mail.

ARTIST PHILIP HITCHCOCK ANNOUNCES STUNNING FOLLOW-UP TO SELL-OUT SHOW

May 1998

HIGHWAYS TO HOST "RESTRAINING ORDER...NO CLOSER THAN 500 YARDS."

Santa Monica, CA - On the heels of his overwhelmingly successful exhibit in Long Beach, "Medieval/ Millennial," Philip Hitchcock announces his latest effort, "RESTRAINING ORDER... NO CLOSER THAN 500 YARDS," a sculptural exhibit exploring mental and physical bondage.

The exhibition will hang from August 1, 1998 through September 28, 1998 at HIGHWAYS visual arts gallery. Witnesses may view the exhibit from 10:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday and before performances Thursday through Sunday between 6:30 and 8:30pm. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, August 1, 1998 between 6:30 and 8:30 pm.

"I see beauty in frustration and confinement," says Hitchcock, "because out of it comes release and freedom."

Indeed the exhibit explores the layers of obstacles we place upon ourselves and those placed upon us by circumstance. As a metaphor for these hurdles the artist portrays life size figures bound and shackled in in perfectly placed ropes and studied restraint. One figure with a seven foot iron wingspan symbolizes the frustration of thwarted potential; for flight, with tattered iron wings, is impossible.

The artist plans 9 new sculptures for the exhibit which will hang for the two month festival ECCE LESBO/ ECCE HOMO this summer at HIGHWAYS. HIGHWAYS is located @ 1651 18th Street in Santa Monica.

Hitchcock's latest show, "Medieval/Millennial"

April 1997

For ARTSCAPE nearly sold out in the first two weeks, setting a gallery record in sales. A reviewer from The Long Beach PRESS TELEGRAM summed up the show:"Emulating prurient aspects of Gothic sexuality, these torsos are skillfully executed replicas of the male anatomy that evoke the same smoldering eroticism found in Harlequin novels."

Some of the "Medieval" work will be featured in a British film recently shot in Los Angeles entitled, "Je m'applelle Crawford." It's release from Warner Bros. is scheduled for next year. Also from this showing, Hitchcock was selected to be the subject of a documentary by Rome's RAI-TV to air in Italy later this year. His next show is to be hosted by HIGHWAYS and opens in August.
