The Subject.
The subject is draped in plastic and alginate is applied over the entire head and shoulder area. He breathes through tubes in his mouth.
Cotton is embedded in the anterior hemisphere ONLY. The posterior hemisphere has no cotton embedded in it.
A two-part shell (mother mold) is created out of plaster gauze. Hitchcock fashions a lateral dividing “shim.”
The rear shell hemisphere slips off the back and a “zipper” is cut into the alginate all the way to the crown.
The two-part shell is bound together and the hardened alginate is held in place with denture adhesive.
The mold is filled with Ultracal 30, a USG cement.
The head and shoulder bust is delivered from the mold.
The bust is manicured and primed in grey. It matches the subject in every detail.
